Bruce Mau’s Incomplete Manifesto for Growth

Years ago, either seven, eight or nine, I was fortunate to stumble upon Bruce Mau’s Incomplete Manifesto for Growth in the pages of ID magazine. Perhaps it was just a mention of Mr. Mau, and further investigation led to his manifesto. Memory is light. Perhaps the very contents of the IMFG resulted in a lowered emphasis on events. The point being that it has been very influential in my formulation of modes of thought. Spurred on by Brik’s top 6(?) of mind blowing items, I’ve decided to go over some (all?) of the bullet pointed ideas from my 12/2/2002 printout of the IMFG that expanded me.

1. Allow events to change you.

This is like saying “I allow the sky to be blue”. It’s going to happen whether you allow it to or not. Everything you experience filters through your senses and becomes a part of your personal history, regardless of how innocuous. However, there is something to be said for being conscious and accepting of this inevitability. For instance, everyone knows at one level or another that one day he/she will die. The difference is in those levels. Some people make peace with reality and can go through life confident and unafraid, while others struggle against the truth until the end. Likewise, the various events/possibilities/opportunities of a life can be vigorously censored, or left to flow easily. If you want to grow, limiting your personal inputs, regardless of your prejudice about the inputs, is going to hurt, not help.
