IMFG #2: Forget about good

“Good” is one of the most powerful concepts in civilization, and as such, it one of the least scrutinized. It is simple to follow the same patterns of activity and thought as an individual if they have been categorized as good by some authority, be it yourself or something outside you. Good is self-explanatory, justifiable, accepted and easy. Why would you want to do anything that’s not good? No one in their right mind would want to do anything bad, right? Who wants a bad grade/bad press/bad design/bad game/etc?

The problem? When you only think about things in terms of good or bad, you never explore bad. You limit yourself to things which are known to be good, which is a small subset of all the things that are or could be good. Like a fish in a bowl, limits don’t let you grow. Oftentimes, the best things are reached by a path that you never anticipated walking, one that was neither good nor bad, but simply unknown.
