Driving from BWI back in to Baltimore the other night on I-295. The city is reconstructing the on/off-ramp from Russell St. to 295, and has been for a few years. On the inbound ramp, the road has been narrowed to one lane using concrete barriers. When driving down the lane, which is about a half mile long, it feels as if your car is as agile as a canoe and wide as a tank. The lane is NARROW. The city has seen fit to post not one, but two discrete signs reading: STAY IN LANE.

It reminded me of the old stand-by message scrolling on the LEDs inside each the MARC train car: NO MESSAGE.

To me, this is a fascinating cultural artifact of modern life in the US.
